On 9 April 2024, the first official meeting of the Director General of the Regional Commonwealth in the Field of Communications, Alexey Borodin, and the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, took place.

The meeting was held at the ITU headquarters (Geneva, Switzerland) in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The parties discussed the status and prospects of co-operation between the Union and the Commonwealth.

The ITU Secretary General favorably noted the contribution of the region's liaison administrations to the Union's activities and their productive work during its major events. For his part, the Director General of the RCC reaffirmed the commitment of the RCC Communications Administrations to the aims and objectives of the Union and expressed the Commonwealth's interest in strengthening links between ITU headquarters and regional telecommunication organizations.

The meeting touched upon, among other things, preparations for the next major ITU events - the ITU Council Summer Session 2024, the forthcoming World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly in India this autumn, and the World Telecommunication Development Conference 2025, the venue for which has not yet been finalized.

An important aspect of the discussions was also the significant role and strong stance of the Communications Administrations of the RCC with regard to global processes in the field of communications, in particular, in this context, preparations for the overall review of the implementation of the World Summit on the Information Society and, of course, the work on the Global Digital Compact and their interconnection were touched upon.

The meeting was also attended by: on behalf of the RCC, Maria Bolshakova, Acting Deputy Director General of the RCC, and on behalf of the ITU, Sulina Abdulla, Acting Head of the Digital Knowledge Centre Department of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau, and Beatrice Pluchon, Head of Member-States' Relations.
